After much consideration we have chosen to award the following grants that we feel express the mission and exciting educational opportunities for the students of the Webster Public Schools.
"Starlab Portable Planetarium", Chris Huber-Regele, WMS;
The goal of the project is for students to explore the model night sky as it changes due to the effects of earth's rotation and orbit. Students will observe the moon in it's current phase and understand how it changes over time. Also, students will learn which planets are currently visible, how to find them, and the reasons for the current controversy over what a planet actually is. The goals and objectives will be achieved through the use of a portable planetarium.
"Park Ave Music Curriculum Materials", Valerie Howes, PAE;
To purchase materials and instruments that will enhance the students learning and enjoyment of music, supporting all grades at PAE. Materials and instruments will aid in the class experiences of singing/playing instruments/movement/rhythm work, etc. The benefit of teaching children to keep a steady beat, sing on pitch and play instruments independently will extend into the upper grands and enhance each student's Middle and High School experience.
"Greenhouse", Linda Neff, WMS;
Through hands on project based learning, students will discover the benefits of composting and growing their own nutritious food. Students would have the opportunity to compare the cost effectiveness and nutritional value of growing their own food. Students would use the green house in conjunction with a school garden and would be involved in building and maintaining the green house.
"College Admissions Plus College Field Trips", Kim Dobro, BHS;
Funds from WEF would provide bus transportation for two field trips to area colleges for all juniors who take the College Admissions Plus course so they may experience what it is like to be on a few college campuses. They will be introduced to all facets of the college admission process via "Your Plan for College", a state of the art internet based program that BHS has been chosen as a pilot school for a new initiate through the Massachusetts Education Financing Authority (MEFA).
"Vex Robotics Classroom Lab Kits", Michael Hackenson, BHS;
Funds from WEF would be used to purchase robotics kits which would supplement a kit from QCC. In addition to a volunteer teacher, the kits would introduce 7th graders to a first time robotics experience with the goal of competing in the Robotics Competition in the Spring.
"Field Trip to DECA Competition", Maryann Woodcock, BHS;
The goal of this field trip is to expose Business Law students to the procedures and dealings used at the Worcester House of Correction in West Boylston, MA. This trip helps students develop an awareness of their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States and gives them a first hand look at the business world, encourages them to solve problems and make decisions independently in a real world setting, helps bring concepts studied to life and helps them decide if this is an area they would like to study in college.
"Boston Museum of Science Traveling Programs", Ellen Jeffers, PAE;
The goal of this project is to support the learning goals of the Massachusetts science learning standards by having the students participate in two traveling school programs offered by the Boston Museum of Science. The objective of the Life Cycles program would be to bring science to life for the 2nd graders of PAE. The Museum will bring live animals to the classroom, allowing students to explore the variety of life cycles found in the world. Additionally, Observing Electricity and Magnets program will allow students to examine the properties of electricity and magnetism and learn how the two are related through a series of demonstrations and volunteering during the presentation.
